Major Pipeline Project in Massachusetts Could Mean Thousands of Jobs

Here at the National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Services (NAHETS), we love to hear about pending major construction projects. Any new project means jobs, and that means the need for training. So we are excited with the recent news that Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. is in the planning stages of a 250-mile pipeline through Massachusetts. Construction will potentially start in 2017 and could mean 3,000 jobs in the region, many of which will be tied to heavy equipment.Nahets 9

Richard Wheatley, a spokesman for the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co., said the project is aimed at helping to meet the growing demand for natural gas in the Northeast. The new line would branch off the existing line at the Massachusetts-New York border in Berkshire County and head north through Franklin County into Worcester County, ending in Dracut in Middlesex County.

Permits and the final routing needs to be completed but company and governmental officials believe the pipeline will happen. The pipeline announcement comes on the heels of the release of two major reports about construction spending and pipeline construction.

According to company materials, Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. LLC is based in Houston, and transports and stores natural gas via a 13,900-mile pipeline from Texas, Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico to the Northeast. It is a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP. Kinder Morgan is also based in Houston and operates about 80,000 miles of pipelines and 180 terminals in North America, making it the third-largest energy company on the continent.

Kinder Morgan has more than 11,000 employees and has a combined enterprise value of approximately $110 billion. The company is also known for being the following:

—             The largest natural gas pipeline and storage operator in the U.S.

—             The largest independent transporter of refined petroleum products in the U.S.

—             The largest independent terminal operator in the U.S.

—             The largest transporter and marketer of CO2 in the U.S.

—             The only oil-sands pipeline serving the West Coast of Canada.
